What is Computer Vision Syndrome?
If you spend several hours per day on the computer and suffer from tired eyes, headaches, itchy, watery, or burning eyes you may be suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). There are a multitude of reasons for why CVS occurs including a decreased blink rate due to staring/focusing hard on your computer screen which reduced effective distribution of your tear film across your cornea. This can result in corneal SPK (superficial punctate keratitis), which often results in a sandy or burning sensation in your eyes. Furthermore, electronic light sources emit blue light which has been shown to increase eye fatigue and even possibly interfere with our sleep patterns if we are over exposed. A good way to reduce symptoms of computer vision syndrome is to follow the 20/20/20 rule which suggests a 20 second break every 20 minutes during which we focus on an object at least 20 feet away. Blue blocker lenses can also be very effective in reducing exposure to harmful wavelengths from electronic screens.
